We've all heard certain phrases when you see a sports phrase "taking an opponent out of the game". It usually applies to an athlete or a team that is known to have a strength. Whether it be a team with a good running defense or a fast running back. Teams will always try to find a weakness and exploit it. The most effective teams find these weaknesses fast, and force a game to be played under their conditions. Example, if a football team has a great running attack, the defense will force them to beat them with their passing game.
In Halo, the same can be said. Certain teams have their "star" player or dominant player in the game. They could have a great sniper, or a dominant shotgun player. Their defense in CTF could be difficult to infiltrate.
For every strategy, there is an equally effective counterstrategy.
Sometimes we may complain that a team is dominating us by controlling all the "power" weapons. This may be snipers/rockets/vehicles.
In every situation, there is always a way to counter what they have. Just because a team has "better weapons" it doesn't mean game over for the other team. It just has to be played right.
Lets start with weapons. Every weapon has a strength and a weakness. Sniper- dominant long range... difficult short range. Shotgun- dominant short range....ineffective long range. So lets simplify this situation in a head to head match. The sniper is going to want to keep distance from the opponent, while the shotgun will want a close range battle. Whichever player you are, you'll want to use the environment to your advantage. Your goal is to gain the advantage.. either by forcing the opponent away from you, or to initiate a close range fight.
Opening this up a bit, there are many other weapons on the map to choose from, which increases your options.
Back to the "power weapons" idea. Situation: Team Slayer on Ivory Tower. Your opponents have Sniper, Shotgun, BR, and Sword and are holding the sniper location. Yes, they have the power weapons, but this is an easy situation if approached correctly. There are many other options on this map that can help the situation.. Carbine, plasma rifle, needler, plasma pistol, and don't forget grenades! Sure, you don't have sniper/rocket/shotgun or sword, but thats okay. Since they are holding a position, they are stationary. Your team on the other hand can use this to your advantage. Since they are trying to hold a specific area, they are less mobile. By being less mobile, it can make them more susceptible to attack. You have the rest of the map for you to use. You can use it to distract an opponent or make them think you are attacking from one way and go from the other side. Since we do know they have sniper, we'll have to "take them out of the game." How, you may ask? Quite simply, for sniper, keep out of sight. For shotgun, stay out of short range.
In a situation like this, sometimes you may have to choose which weapon or person is causing most problem. If it's the sniper, hide and make the others attack you. If it's the shotgun/sword, force the sniper to shoot you. Not every sniper is the same. Some are stronger than others. If one is known to have trouble sniping, make them try to take you out, but use evasive tactics.
Now, based on score will also base what action your team takes. If they are winning, most likely they'll try to hold thier spot. If your team has the lead, why attack them? Hide under near the sword spawn and force them to come get you. Some teams with a lead may use their aggressive nature, and in that case you may want to hide, even if you are behind. You are now forcing them to play your way.
If they have the lead, and do not want to leave thier spot, now a decision has to be made. You will have to attack thier position.... but in a way where you can still use what you have to your advantage. You may want to use a distraction and use others as full attackers. You may want to attack from underneath and throw grenades up there. There are many many ways to approach this situation as you can see.
Every location and every weapon, no matter how much of a "power weapon" it may be, theres always a way to gain an advantage.
If one person in particular is beating your team, just "take them out of the game" by avoiding them and forcing the rest of the team to beat you. Same thing goes for a vehicle, such as a tank or a Banshee. If they are out in the open, such as Containment, just move in areas where you cannot be killed, such as the trench in the middle of the map. When in a confined space, such as the base, just shoot some rockets, or some well timed grenades may do the trick.
In summary, never count out your options. No matter how difficult the circumstances may be, theres always a way to turn things around in your favor.
